PROGRAM OVERVIEW
Elemental Team Challenge (28 Best Practices) is a leadership framework designed to strengthen teams by categorizing the 28 best practices into four elements: Fire, Earth, Water, and Wind.
Each element represents a core area of team dynamics:
FIRE is about creating excitement and motivation.
EARTH focuses on providing stability and grounding.
WATER emphasizes the need for transformation and adaptability.
WIND signifies the importance of releasing what's unnecessary and embracing change.
WHAT
The approach simplifies complex organizational behaviors into relatable concepts, making it easier for leaders to diagnose and enhance team performance. The methodology, developed by Laurie Beth Jones, involves a diagnostic tool that helps teams visualize their strengths and challenges, promoting targeted improvements. Leaders are encouraged to complete the Elemental Team Challenge (ETC) to understand how to apply it effectively within their teams. The framework is part of a broader training program, which includes further reading (like Jones' book "The Four Elements of Success"), assessments, and coaching sessions, all aimed at fostering a cohesive and dynamic team culture.
FIRE
There are 7 core attributes that generate excitement within a team. Fire is the focus element. The root word “fire” comes from the latin word, ‘focare’ which means focus. In this team session we coach the team towards the ‘Big Picture’ view and look for clues in the Elemental Challenge Summary.
1. Team members have a clear understanding of the vision of the organization.
2. Team members understand and express what makes this organization unique.
3. Team members are clearly aware of the organization’s strategic advantage.
4. Team members responsible for implementation have direct input put to strategic planning.
5. Team members understand direct link to, and benefit from the vision.
6. Team members are actively recruited for core competencies that are aligned with the organizational vision.
7. Reward systems recognize actions leading toward the vision.
EARTH
There are 7 core attributes that generate grounding within a team. Earth is the grounding element. Think Terra Firma. In this team session we coach the team towards ‘Sustaining Team’ and look for clues in the Elemental Challenge Summary.
1. Team members are fully aware of potential obstacles, costs and challenges that lie ahead."
2. Team members understand their accountability for the overall performance of the organization.
3. Team members have clearly defined short-term goals that link to the vision.
4. All short-term goals are measurable and reviewed weekly.
5. 360 feedback loop is in place that allows for fair and regular internal flows of communication.
6. Team members hold self and others to a clearly defined standard of behavior.
7. Financial, technical and human resources are aligned throughout the organization to ensure near and long-term growth.
WATER
There are 7 core attributes that generate transformation within a team. Water is the transformation element. Nothing lives without it. In this team session we coach the team towards ‘nurturing high quality teams’ and look for clues in the Elemental Challenge Summary.
1. Management knows personal mission & vision of each team member.
2. Every team member has a personal development plan, coach, mentor in place.
3. Team members’ personal growth and development are top priorities and action items for management.
4. Leaders and managers model organizational values on a daily basis.
5. The team is constantly learning and improving itself through innovative ideas, structures, and technology.
6. R&D for new products/services are integrated into all departments.
7. Team members quickly adapt to obstacles, always keeping the vision in mind.
WIND
There are 7 core attributes that generate release within a team. Wind is the release element. The Wind symbol represents the Greek symbol for “active intellect.” In this team session we coach the team towards ‘Freedom’ to do the work they were trained to do and look for clues in the Elemental Challenge Summary.
1. Team members are aware of, and operating out of, their highest strengths at least 85% of the time.
2. Team members have clear authority to release organizational resources/services on behalf of customers, staff and stakeholders.
3. Team members leverage core competencies through strategic alliances.
4. Team members have fair and well-proportioned workloads that allow flexibility and freedom.
5. Meetings are well planned, brief and empowering.
6. Roles and responsibilities are clearly defined.
7. Each team member can “message” and demonstrate the organizational vision at any time and under any circumstances.
